its a bad system, one of many im sad to say. the mechanics under the hood of this game are probably more bad than good im sorry to say. i enjoy the game and obviously a lot of love has been poured into it but the maths behind how characters work is pretty far from great.
in most rpg systems the power on levelup thing is somewhat illusory right? for a game to be fun it has to be challenging enough but not oppresivley challenging, therefor as you level up and gain power the challenges must increase in a relative way so on some level ur always standing still. its always one step forward one step back.
a good one kind of hides this even when its there. you start in a cave and theres 2 rats, you swing a stick twice and kill the 2 rats, thats level 1. at lvl80 you are in some kind of ruined demonic necropolis and giant swarms of hellknights are attacking you from either side, you swing one way and unleash a wave of infernal chaos that wipes out an entire pack of them, swing the other way sending out a hail of chain lightning that completely fries the rest. On some level thats the same thing right? you attacked twice and killed the things attacking you, from a certain view your character hasnt actually progressed. but it really, really feels like you have, theres a sense of it.
what we have here is the exact same mobs and levels, you have 50% crit chance against them, you level up and it goes down to 49%, you bomb in 10 ferocity points, plug in a passive and you are back to 50%. then you go into a level that looks exactly the same, all the mobs are the same, and your character feels exactly the same as it did before. honestly id rather the monsters gained even more life but my crit chance just kept going up, at least that number on my character sheet would be going up even if the gameplay essentially stayed static. but right now its so painfully pronounced just how much nothing changes, how theres no progression at all.
