What stopped me from playing Wolcen
Before I start, I want to say that I have much experience with ARPG games, had hundreds of hours in Grim Dawn before trying Wolcen.
What I love about Wolcen:
1. Looks gorgeous, the best of ARPG games right now.
2. Streamlined system about items and skills, damage types,...
3. Beautiful effects, dynamic fighting system with dodging,...
4. Story mode is great, nice cutscenes, boss fight with many stages,...
What frustrates me:
1. Cant spam using health potion. Health potion only replenished by killing enemy.
This is very counter-intuitive. Like I'm out of health and potion, running away from tons of enemy, if I want to replenish health, I have to kill enemy, so as long as I turn back, I die.
2. Boss fight in wolcen is punishing people as they are not competent.
You are easy to die because of 1 mentioned above. The boss fight can be long if you are undergeared, running around to find opening to shoot or dash, and nearly at the end, you are out of 3 lives and the fight resets, after an hour of fighting and all effort is loss. The game literally punishes players for being undergeared and incompetent.
In other games, if you are undergeared and not skillful, you can kill the boss in hours instead of minutes, with picking character's corpse hundreds of time. And all the effort is still worthwhile in the end, no time is loss.
It's a good thing wolcen has a different take on things, but this system is only good for some hardcore players, not general players who are finding games to relax rather than to make them more frustrated from normal day's things. Trust me, this replenish and revive system is discouraging people from playing the game.
It;s easier if I go online and look for advice to kill the boss. But it;s the thing, not all players want to seek advice or videos which contain many spoilers. Many players want to learn the game by themselves as they progress in the game, and this kind of players like me can be stuck at boss fight for a long time and quit the game eventually.
