Does it really matter what class you begin with?

I've played through the campaign now and started as a RANGER/ARCHER whatever its called. Ended up playing a melee in the end anyway. All skills drop and when I look at the different classes, the tree looks the same to me and so does the stats. Does it really differ then in any way? Or is it just a wierd way of trying to make something like POE does, doesnt matter what you play your still able to change it. Start as a RANGER might end up a caster anyway?

No it doesn't matter at all, this only determined your beginner's skills, after that you are totally free to do whatever you want.

Not really, just changes your starting weapon I believe

I believe that the different classes will have different drops chances. For example mage class is generally oriented around Force Shield and therefore it is getting more "Force Shield" stats drops, at least from my experience. I've tried changing it to HP build but I am still getting more Force Shield stats than HP. The stat that have percentage of moving slower willpower to rage is also more often to be rolled in a drop when you play with a mage class.
