Work in Progress : Weapon Styles Combos, Projectiles Collision

Hi everyone !
It has been a while since the last devblog article, a now that the Early Access storm has passed, it’s time we give the community a sneak peek at some the cool features we are working on.

Weapon Styles Combos and Dashes

One of the key goals for Wolcen is to make combat feel satisfying and fun. To achieve that we already included a Dodge-roll button to the game, and made blood and gore look better.
But that is just part of what we are planning to do with combat in the near future.

When you’ll equip a weapon, your basic attack skill (left click) will be replace by a weapon-specific combo attack, and your right click will give you a special move. Combos will end in a finisher move that can for example do a sweeping move around the character. Some weapon style will give you an alternate combo finisher. Heavy Weapons like two-handed Hammers will perform slow but powerful blows that’ll leave your opponents stunned, while dual daggers will do little damage but will allow the player to build up very long combo chains that do more damage with each blow. Weapon and Shield will allow you to enter a shield parry stance to build up aggro and resources.

Each Weapon Style will also enable to perform a weapon-specific dash-attack, closing in on the enemy when under a certain distance from your target. Lighter weapon will allow you to quickly dash from target to target, while heavier ones will perform a charge that may push enemies aside.

Here is an example of a work in progress one-handed sword combo animation :

When equipped with only a one handed sword, the character will use his strength to wield this lightweight weapon and deliver swift and powerful blows.

When wielding a two-handed hammer, the player will be able to execute a 4-hit combo, and choose between a 360° sweep finisher, and an upward strike that will eject the enemy away. Here’s how the work-in-progress animation looks like :

When combined with the dodge-roll and dashing mechanics, Wolcen’s combat will feel dynamic, fast-paced and brutal as ever.

Projectile Collision and Interaction

There’s a lot of cool projectile-based spells in Wolcen, thanks to CryEngine’s advanced particle system. And projectiles are about to get a lot cooler with the ability for projectiles to collide with each other !

There will be 3 ways projectiles can interact when colliding :

First, projectiles can simply cancel each other out. This means you’ll be able to kamehameha battle defend yourself against those pesky Orc Battle Mages by casting your own Umbra Fury at them.
This could also be used when launching a projectile of the opposing element.

Secondly, you can can deflect projectiles with your own

Finally, a chain reaction can be created, and a wide range of explosive nova can be created upon collision. This will allow for combos between spells.

Right now the particle collision system only works against enemy projectiles, but it is being expended to work with the player’s own projectiles and more importantly, to work with other player’s projectiles !
Players will be able to truly cooperate to create some truly awesome combos between spells. There is A LOT of new gameplay possibilities with this feature and we are confident it will add a lot of depth and fun to co-op play.

That’s it for today, but stay tuned, as we have a lot of awesome features in the design phase.

Thank you for your support.
