Nice, France – May 14, 2015 – Today, SolarFall Games launches their Kickstarter campaign for Umbra, a CryEngine3-based action-RPG featuring stunning visuals and deep and rich gameplay.

Umbra is an open world action-RPG taking place in a corrupted world that is falling apart. You are a former soldier, forced to flee the death penalty because of your magic powers. Being tracked down by humans and hunted by the monsters of the Wild, you are recruited by a mysterious group of Templars, and thus your epic adventure begins…

SolarFall Games’ Lead Programmer and Game Director Daniel Dolui said

“We are fully committed to Umbra and to staying independent; there are no publishers or private investors behind us. We hope that Kickstarter will allow us to remain this way and enable us to deliver Umbra true to our original vision.”

Featuring a unique mechanic called “Apocalyptic Form”, you are able to shape-shift into a highly customized character. Mold your character using the comprehensive customization system and create your home using the complex crafting mini-game – all combine to make your adventure feel as unique as possible.

As a former officer of the Republic, you developed magical powers in a world where such things are forbidden. You tried to hide it but the hierarchy found out. Rather than execute you, they attempted to capture you and conduct experiments on your body. However, you managed to escape and take refuge in the wild. Facing attacks from monstrous creatures and hopelessly outnumbered, you were on the brink of failure when suddenly rescued by the mysterious order of the Templars.

  • Open World – Discover the world and enjoy it at your own convenience.
  • Exploration and experimentation – rewards based on your play style.
  • Free character development – No class limitation.
  • Apocalyptic Form – Develop special powers based on how you play.
  • Tons of Loot – Weapons, Armor, Potions and random magic effects.
  • Semi procedural Weaponry – Blades, pommel, etc.
  • Advanced Crafting mini-game – Build your own weapons and armors.
  • Tons of Destructible environments – We hope you enjoy it!
  • Housing – Create your own house and showcase your work.
  • Complete story – full of secrets to discover while exploring the world.

Umbra shows the huge potential that CRYENGINE offers for even the smallest teams to create visually stunning games. SolarFall’s use of particle effects and vegetation turned a lot of heads on the show floor at GDC, and we’ve been consistently impressed by the expertise they have shown in getting the most out of our technology.”

Welcome to the world of Umbra!

It has been an amazing first 24 hours for us!

We already have raised more than $25,000 in 24 hours. A massive thanks to the 1000+ backers, which is a very strong start for our small indie development team! We really want to thank everyone who has supported our campaign and voted for us on Steam Greenlight! Please, spread the word and share our game with your friends, on Twitter, Facebook and Reddit!

Bringing the game to the state where is it today was hard work, guided by passion and love for a universe we would like to bring to life. It is a great achievement for us to see that gamers are ready to help us to achieve our vision and also, seeing Umbra featured on many video game websites and receiving the support from the legendary Brian Fargo on Twitter has been an incredible event for us!

We hear what you’re saying, and we understand that some of you are curious to see what our stretch goals are, and what the amounts for said stretch goals will be. At this time, we’re completely focused on getting the campaign funded and feel that revealing stretch goals so early in the campaign is not the way to go, but rest assured that you WILL get to see them soon.

As for gamepad support, here is the current status: There is an early implementation of pad and Xbox controller in the game. However, this implementation is not fully complete, and would require more work to fulfill. This is why pad/xbox controller support has been set as a stretch goal, we want to do things properly and not just give you a slap dash port of controls. We want it to feel right, natural if you will and this will require time to develop, especially the menu systems for spells and actions.

About DRM, yes, there will be a no-DRM version of Umbra for Kickstarter Backers!

This is on top of the Steam backers you’ll all get for your pledge (so don’t forget to vote on our Steam Greenlight page).

Linux version? Yes we will support it!

And before we go, we also want to mention that Umbra is now a Kickstarter Staff Pick!

This is in great part because of all of the support you’ve shown us during the first day of our campaign, so thanks!

This has been a tremendous start for Umbra! In only four days more than 3,200 backers have joined our cause, pledging over $100,000 towards our main goal of $225,000! We can’t thank you enough, and we hope that you continue to spread the word so that more people can join us and help us to reach our goal.

Today, we want to present to you more information about the environment for the game and its relationship with the gameplay. The following video will show you an awesome combo you can create thanks to your surroundings, and it also ends up presenting some technical information about our work using Quixel MEGASCANS technology.

We’ve had a lot of question about the default reward (WARRIOR), and basically many of you wanted to know how many copies they would get by pledging for the Kickstarer at said level. Below is our official answer, which we think you will like:

Many backers have asked about the Steam copy of the game and the DRM-free copy of the game. How will it work, is that 2 different copies, and will the armors, weapons and pet skins be available for each copy?

We discussed internally about that – initially, we wanted them to be unique for the backer – and finally thought that it would be much better for us to build a community around the game, as well as to show our support for those of you who believe in us.

So yes, Kickstarter backers will get two digital copies of the game, and depending on the tier at which each of you are backing, the armor sets, pet skins, etc. will apply to all the copies of the game you’re getting. This means you can gift one of the copies of Umbra to a friend (yay!) because what we want is to finish our game and to get as many people as possible to play it.

Therefore, the higher you pledge the more stuff you get!

Once again, we want to say thank you to everyone. You’re helping to get us closer to our main goal, so you deserve to get more bang for your buck!

Note that the Steam Early Access will, obviously, only apply to the Steam key.

We hope this will please many of you. Who knows, it might push some of you to raise your pledge!

Finally, we would like to talk to you about some of our indie friends who are running Kickstarter campaigns right now, and who could use your support.

4000+ backers and more than 135,000 dollars! This is huge! We are now 60% funded after only 6 days on Kickstarter! We want to thank every backer again, and to take this opportunity to welcome all the new ones who have joined us over the last two days!

Today, we are making a special update about an early concept of a boss from Umbra: The mighty and Dreadful Lambach ! It will be a good way for you to discover some of our unrevealed gameplay elements, and learn a bit more about the lore of the game.

Lambach used to be an ambitious human scientist of the Republic, but his limited understanding of the world lead him to explore the land of the occult. His main interest was the secrets of life and the human body. By reading a tome of ancient knowledge and forgotten religion, he slowly discovered forbidden secrets that humans should have never been aware of.

He tried to enter in contact with unearthly entities, but he failed at every try. He pushed his research more and more, visiting the most cursed places in the world, digging into graveyards and exploring forgotten crypts to harness infernal books and artifacts.

He started to run Red Mass, practicing cannibalism, and he slowly started to lose his mind. He outcast himself from the human world only coming back to capture subjects for his experiments.

He finally entered in contact with a Demonic Entity and signed a pact, exchanging his soul for arcane knowledge on Life and the Flesh. His exterior appearance changed completely, developing into what you can see in the concept image.

But dealing with daemons is always tricky. Lambach was overwhelmed by all the new knowledge he gained, and didn’t have the supernatural powers to exploit them and create life. He started to build unstable Flesh golems and mutated creatures that couldn’t live more than few days.

Despaired by his inability to understand the knowledge he received, he once again ran Red Mass and performed more and more acts of cannibalism, trying to reach the Daemon he had made a pact with. Unfortunately, he never managed to get an answer from him.

Today, Lambach’s body is horribly mutated by all the dark magic he used. He lives in a place called the ”Cathedral of Flesh”, a construction hidden underground where he perform his hideous experiments, and some of his monstrous creation often come up to the surface to terrorize the human population.

From a gameplay point of view, Lambach is located in a swarming pool, a mix of Blood and Water. Players will mostly have their feet in the pool, unless they move on top of the few rocks in the area. He will have several powers, including the following:

  • The area around Lambach is surrounded with cocoons of his creation. Regularly, said cocoons will open and release a mutated created that will slowly move towards Lambach. If Lambach catchs said creatures, he will regain some health.
  • Bite: Lambach bites his opponent and regains some health.
  •  Rapid Attack: Lambach rapidly strikes, performing cleaving attacks. His last attack pushes the player away.
  • Infernal Lightning: Similar to Chain Lightning. Don’t stay in the Swarming Pool when Lambach casts this spell!
  • Swarming pool summoning: Lambach puts his hand in the ground and the swarming pool starts to boil. Mutated creatures come out from the ground and attack you. During this time, players standing in the pool take damage from the heat. There will be an option for players to try and empty the swarming pool to release its liquid and cancel the Swarming Pool Summoning.
