I will try to phrase my concern as politely as possible. Closing and restarting the game over and over finally worked. I got lucky and was able to start the game in online-mode. But my chest is empty and unlocked. Is my stuff lost?

Try to relog a few times. Your regular chest should become visible. It's a work-around until it's fixed.
