My thoughts so far about the game (spoilers inside)

So im a arpgs veteran who prefers melee builds. I have played a lot of arpgs and almost always pushed for the highest endgame content available (except from diablo 3, i dumped that game). Played a ton of PoE, grim dawn, D2, Sacred 1-2, titan quest, torchlight etc.
I have to say i was very excited about umbra when i saw it on kickstarter and it has changed quite a lot from what i saw back then.
I decided to buy it a few days before the release to get to know the game's mechanics but unfortunately i have to say im overall dissapointed.

The good: graphics are fine, effects are cool, some armor designs are ok although most are meh, animations are good and responsive (most of the times), "classless" and not gender-bound is a big plus.

The bad: Story (only act 1 so far ofc) the story and especially the script is juvenile at best (choreography in cutscenes needs work as well).

Some things that come to mind from 2 story run-throughs are: "Prove to me you are not a demon" to which our player responds "you are a tool" that somehow proves him not being a demon. Had a few laughs with that.

In the opening cutscene we watch our men getting bombarded with arrows so they have to shield up. However, just two feet next to them the inquisitor and that chick decide to have a chat while the soldiers next to them remain in shield anti-arrow formation. Why didnt anyone plant two arrows in their heads since they are unprotected and the leaders of the army? They are literally standing next to them.

After our character kills his lifelong friend he speaks to that ancient thing and cracks a few jokes too. He just killed his childhood friend, he should show some emotion (unless he is a psychopath); badly written dialog.
These are the ones that come to mind and im sure i can get a lot more if i play through the game again and take notes.

World (environmental art) Some of the most bland, tasteless, lifeless game areas i have played through. Especially the second half of act 1 where we just descent into necropolis seemed like i was replaying the same area again and again. I understand that the world was redesigned many times because of performance issues but i hope you have something better on release or later.

But lets get to what matters, gameplay.
Now, if you just want to clear monsters im sure you can find 2-3 op skills and passives, make a build and have fun. However if you are someone who cares about balance and having many options this is where the problems begin. There are huge skill power gaps. Especially between melee and ranged ones. Also some of the skill specializations seem copy pasted from other skills, unoriginality is the word that comes to mind. You really need to check the power gap between the skills and buff the hell out of some of them or heavily change the specializations. I can get into more details but not at 4:30 in the morning.

Gem system is really simplistic and outdated (take a look at what grim dawn did with its component system, it's amazing)

Ferocity/Critical builds are king and there is no reason not to go for crit. You really need to give more options that will matter and will be viable.

I didnt find a single melee skill that scaled good with agility/attack speed and even if it did it would still be weaker compared to a bomberer (dagger/bow/pistol skill) or turret build, or even hybrid caster.

The fact that you made spells require a catalyst or staff didnt stick well with me either but i get it was for balancing reasons.

Unique items except from a few build enabling (like 2-3) look, once again, bland. But i didnt mind since its only lvl 20 so that is normal and understandable. Also even though i got a lot of them im sure i didnt get them all.

I realize the game i played is still in beta and only goes up to lvl 20 but the core features i saw is what i have problem with. Unfortunately the game seems like a d3 clone with the dreaded resource management and i hated d3 with a passion.

Here's hoping that after release you will keep polishing the game and make it the best it can be. Waiting eagerly for release hoping it will change my mind.
