Mage Spell Damage Scaling - Tomes
After playing a bit of the current game between shifts at work and watching streamers run the broken melee build using a miscalculated node, I started looking into the numbers. To say this flatly, spells do not scale at all. At level 38 my basic attack hits harder than all of my spells. I planned on building pure spell damage, but as I am finding it hard to do that considering melee skills scale off of your weapon damage. Which your weapon damage can be scaled from your tree.
I am not one to present a problem without trying to find a solution, my boss loves and hates me for this. I present the idea of Tomes. A book item that can be used with either exclusively staves, or if you plan on adding wands or other archetypes they can be used to make a completely willpower based build. With this addition I would give them the innate prefix of "Increases (element base) spell damage by (%)". It keeps a level of grinding to the game by forcing you to find the tome specific to your build and element.
Further, I suggest that staves have a second innate prefix aside from the grace that is basic attack chaining (thank you so much for that). The second prefix would be "Adds ---% Stave Damage To Spells." Staves are effectively useless as there is no benefit to using one over a hybrid build to rage dump. So with adding damage coming from the staff, it would create a different play style. Stave gameplay would revolve around specializing in elemental overload either through raw damage, or ailment stacking. While rage dumping would revolve around perfecting your resource management.
Ultimately, it is up to you to make any changes or add things into the game. Keep up your transparency and hard work.
Best of luck,
Black Wings
