How do you know what Ailment (Occult, Elemental, Material) a spell inflicts?

In the skill tree you can select different types of ailment modifiers but I have no clue as to which they are. For example the spell Burning Embers does which type of ailment? I would assume the Scholar Tree (Witchcraft Consultant) would be the one I want or is it elemental as its fire which I would consider an element?

I believe it depends on the damage it does.

For example...

MATERIAL
Rend > Bleed
Toxic > Poison

ELEMENTAL
Fire > Burning?
Lightning > Static?
Frost > Don't know what it's called off the top of my head.

OCCULT
Shadow > Cursed
Aether > Stasis
Don't remember third one.

Ailments are mainly based on damage type; the damage types can be seen on any weapon's tooltip, with Material including Physical, Toxic and Rend, Elemental including Fire, Ice and Lightning, and Occult including Sacred, Shadow and Aether. Toxic = Poison, Rend = Bleed, Fire = Burn, Ice = Freeze, Lightning = Shock, Sacred = Weakness, Shadow = Curse, Aether = Stasis. Physical is an "empty" damage type, letting you add whichever one you want to your purely Physical attacks just by adding the corresponding damage type to the attack.

So, by default Burning Embers does, well... Burn. :P Meaning it would fall under Elemental Status Ailments. If you take the Fratricidal Reunification rune then it'll do Lightning damage instead so will inflict the Shock ailment, but that's still Elemental anyway so no difference in that regard.

Thanks for taking the time to answer that.
