You only need to hold it until it starts the circle around your icon. Then you can release so you aren't rolling when you res. Unless you want to roll as soon as you res, in which case, just keep holding space.

If you have rebound your dodge to another key from space, hold the new keybinding to res. Took me a few seconds to figure out even though it still says "space"
