I am also getting this error. Steam isn't showing an update is available so the client from Steam isn't allowing us to connect anymore.
Which sucks because I was playing fine and exited the game to patch because the red message popped up. Should have stayed in game :(

Yes, same here. Anybody try uninstalling the game and reinstalling from Steam? This is the only thing I can think of...maybe in the re-install process it will also apply the new update?
