Material dmg & Bleeding edge

Sup guys, I had some questions regarding material dmg and bleeding edge.
Currently I'm using the Bladestorm build and bleeding edge is my secondary dmg skill but the thing is, I'm not sure how to use it properly because sometimes it won't even land on a mob/boss..Am I doing something wrong here? Also, can someone explain what material damage is exactly?

Bleeding edge will feel a LOT better once you have the right runes unlocked/selected. Most notably, Astral Orbit. That;s what makes it rotate around you rather than at your cursor.

Material damage is physical damage, rend damage, and toxic damage.
